The Ninth Floor is just like any other floor in a Manhattan building. But in this case it is the apartment where a group of addicts buy and sell drugs, sleep, argue, make love and fight. For almost three years Jessica Dimmock followed the stories of the ninth floor and of its residents. Many have photographed the tragedy of the world of drugs, but the strength of these images gives a new and extraordinary account, both intimate and raw. 

The 3 bedroom apartment was leased by Joe Smith, 68. In the 70's Joe had been a player in the downtown art scene. Joe subleased a room to a young hustler named Joey; soon Joey was joined by his brother Mike, Mike's girlfriend Jesse, and many others. When I met this group in the fall of 2004 Joe no longer had a bedroom in his apartment. He stayed on the couch in hopes of gaining rent. In exchange for use of his apartment, people contributed money at first, then just bags of heroin, several cigarettes, a teaspoon of methadone or a daily beer. Unable to inject himself, Joe grew dependent on these young residents to shoot him up. Mike and Jesse occupied the largest room in the front of the apartment, Dionn another, Joey the third. Charlie, then Natasha slept in a hidden closet behind a moveable bookcase. And in every corner, of every room, there were others, all of whom were users. The mood inside was muffled, slow, secretive and sick, becalmed by a septic hush.

General Terms and Conditions

1 Scope of these Terms and Conditions

The following general terms and conditions apply to all business relations between Locuslux BVBA (‘Locuslux’) and the customer. Locuslux will process your orders on the basis of the following general terms and conditions. Applicable are the general terms and conditions valid at the time the order is placed.

2 Purchase Contracts

Contracts between Locuslux and the customer are purchase contracts. The mutual obligations are detailed below. Otherwise, the laws of Belgium apply, as far as that is permissible. The features of the goods are detailed in the descriptions. As soon as your order is received, we have entered a contract.

Orders and Prices

The prices include the statutory value-added tax (VAT). The prices do not include packing and shipping. The shipping costs depend on the volume of the order, and the destination. The customer will be informed about shipping costs when the order is processed if different from stated costs on the website (www.locuslux.com). The prices valid at the time of ordering apply.  Goods are shipped after payment has been received.

4 Delivery Times

Locuslux will execute the order at the latest 30 days after the day after the order was received. If the ordered goods are not available we will notify you. You will then have the opportunity to cancel the purchasing contract within 30 days after receipt of our message and demand the return of any payments you have made.

5 Right of Cancellation

You can revoke the purchasing contract within four weeks. The termination period shall commence upon receipt of this notification in writing, however not before receipt of the goods by the buyer. The cancellation or the return of goods should be addressed to:

Consequences of Cancellation

In case of an effective cancellation, the mutually received services and payments must be returned and, if applicable, compensation for use must be granted. If you cannot return all or parts of goods received, or only in an impaired state, you are obligated to compensate us for loss of value. This does not apply if the impairment of the goods is exclusively the result of your examining it, as it would have been possible in a shop. You can avoid the obligation for value loss compensation required for value loss caused by the use of the goods as intended, by not using the goods as if they were your property and refraining from any action that might reduce the goods’ value.

Goods are returned at your risk. You must bear the costs for the return. Obligations for the refund of payments must be fulfilled within 30 days. The period starts with the dispatch of the declaration of cancellation, or the goods, for us with their receipt.
